What career path does a BS in Liberal Arts or Communications prepare you for?

I love these programs of study, but I do not know if they will really help me in my career goals. I am really looking for a degree that is versatile and will help me in a number of occupations. My main intrests are writing, persuading, business planning, and design. I love to work with people, but I also like to lead a group. I currently work as a sales manager, but I hate the office politics. I also dislike math and stressfull work envoirments. If anyone has any idea what program would be right for me, please let me know. I am open to any suggestions you might have! I spent twenty-year years working at the University of California and one thing I told students was to pick a major they enjoyed. There is a misconception that in order to be a doctor you have to take nothing but courses related to medicine. Not true. There are people in medical school who have bachelor's degrees in all different fields. For example, should you decide during you BS degree that medicine is where you want to be, you start taking the preparatory courses. My biggest pain were parents who insisted their children take degree programs in which they sucked. If you can't do Math, then an accounting degree is a poor choice. You aren't likely to succeed. *smile*. There is no limit to what you can achieve with a BS in Liberal Arts or Communication because you can always add courses to prepare you for another avenue should you so decide. I had students who were shocked to learn that Sociology degrees would help them in Law Enforcement. Hope this was helpful.What career path does a BS in Liberal Arts or Communications prepare you for?
Take all the writing courses you can without becoming an English major. Too many people do not write well and if you can write well you will find a wealth of opportunities in many fields.

You also have to figure out what you value--do you want a lot of money or is a flexible schedule more important? Do you want to move up the corporate ladder or do you get your warm fuzzies from teaching people how and why to do something?
Liberal arts can prepare you for a teaching career, and Communications can prepare you for a career in broadcasting or public relations.
Teaching primarily for Lib Arts, Communications is much broader. If you're interested in people --- might want to try some humanities/social services courses.

No, they won't. They lament about the evils of poverty..yet, none of them even have a clue as to what it's like to live paycheck to paycheck. They know what they saw on TV or in a movie...yet they are too dumb to know that it's a SCRIPT and portrayed often in the way that Hollywood would like to shape opinions. As for the red carpet? Not watching the trash. It's a lovefest for them to pat each other on the back and get billion dollar goody bags from companies. It's a joke, and if they were serious in their rhetoric, they would do the awards privately, and then show the highlights. Not spend millions to parade around in expensive outfits and congratulate themselves. Be like the rest of us....don't watch movies or listen to artists who go out and actively try to shame Americans based on their political beliefs. They are paid to act, not be an activist. And paid EXTREMELY well...how hard is it to stick to the job duties with such a huge compensation package? People like to think this method of boycotting doesn't work...but exhibit 1: Rosie O'Donnell. The woman was pretty funny and entertaining at one time....then one day she announces she is a gay woman. (whooooaaaa really Rosie? ) Next thing you know, every sentence starts with ';As a gay woman....'; Then she gets on The View and starts spouting pure nonsense. She was so high and mighty on herself..she thought she was untouchable. Go figure. She is going nowhere now. Now we have the model, let's all follow.
I always find it funny that people demonstrate against fat-cat business leaders earning 'obscene' salaries and bonuses, but you never hear about people protesting about football players or movie stars equally large paychecks.

I assume it's because people perceive value from football games and movies and they don't from business, largely because they don't understand what business does, or what the leaders of business do.

For instance, an actor makes a terrible film that dies at the box office. No-one's demanding that he gives his fee back to the people. But those same people are demanding that Wall Street tycoons who similarly fail at their jobs, should no longer have bonuses or large salaries. It's complete hypocrisy and shows the double standards of most of the population.
When are you going to get it in that skull of yours that Hollywood libs only want to donate half of everybody else's salaries to get America on the socialist track. They plan to sit safely in their gated compounds, jet set in their private planes and hide their money in offshore tax shelters
Of course they will, actors and stuff just pose, they never do what they say. They always talk about the economy and how they'll help or donate to charities, but of course the majority don't. There are the occasional celebrities who do help. So in my opinion i dont think they will.

Also remember that many of them didn't even graduate from high school. They are just not very bright to begin with. Not all, some are very intelligent but if you listen to most of them speak, they have no clue as to how stupid they sound. Like Pink making that campaign commercial for Obama. She said she knew a lot about politics because her father had been in the military! LOL
I think Oprah needs to jump on that and get all her fave movie stars to jump with her. She dumped enough money into his campaign....how bout dumping some of it to ';our failing economy'; I can't believe all these free thinkers and freedom lovers really want a socialistic society. As an attorney who worked very hard to get Al Franken in the Senate, both on the election and during the recount, your question ';FrankenLiberal Monster'; makes virtually no sense.

In his brief period in the Senate Al Franken has already gotten one important piece of legislation passed, which was an amendment to the Defense Appropriation Bill, which required employees of Defense Contractors to arbitrate claims, rather than litigate them.

I am a conservative and I don't support the Iraq War. Gun Control is for wussies for who are afraid of guns, abortion kills babies because their mother was irresponsible and most likely a worthless, fithy prostitute, national health care raises taxes, and marriage is between a man and woman, not 2 men. Being liberal enables one to actually think for yourself and use the brain God gave you. Being conservative means living in a ridiculous little cartoon fantasy world and chirping mindless slogans in lieu of actual ideas, as your post and the conservatives' attempts at a response proves.
There is no advantage one way or the other. Everyone of us is liberal or conservative depending on the issue at hand.

I don't drink or smoke and consider those things to be a vice. I also don't gamble and was raised to think that that was a vice as well.

But I certainly don't support the creation of laws making it illegal for folks to engage in those activies. As a liberal I don't believe it's the government's role to legislate individual morality.

And on the other hand I love movies with lots of gratuitous sex and violence. Not really a conservative value.

I don't sit around and think a lot about gun control, but I do think the use of bullets which can penetrate a policeman's bulltet proof vest should be illegal. Does that make me a liberal, because I think a policeman's safety is more important than the average joe having access to that kind of ammunition?? I don't view guns as adult toys. They are a deadly serious right that Americans possess and clearly abuse to the detriment of us all.

Abortion....I don't presume to judge anyone who has been in that situation. The women I know who have had abortions are today loving mothers and interestingly all Born Again Christians. A far cry from your description of such women.

I am with you where marriage is concerned. Man and woman should carry the day. But gay couples should have the rights to civil unions. I don't agree with their lifestyle at all, but they have every right to practice it with other consenting adults.

And Labor Unions....they don't have any friends in Washington from what I have seen. Jobs are leaving this nation at record rates...American Labor better start flexing its muscles before it's too late. And why is it a Liberal Value to support the American working man and woman. What is the advantage in being a conservative? There isn't any advantage to either side. it's simply what you believe.

Okay, I take that back. There is one advantage to being a liberal- Facts support your arguments more. However, conservitives have an advantage in that the arguments they make may not be factual, but they appeal to the emotional side of people.

See healthcare for a prime example. If you work out the math on universal healthcare, it winds up costing the average person less even with the increase in taxes it would require, but ';They'll have to raise taxes'; gets emotions running high.
It's not an ';advantage / disadvantage'; thing.

They are two different social and political philosophies, each of which has some things that it values more than others.

You oppose gun control, because you think the govt should not be regulating what you do if you're not harming anyone else -- that's the liberal perspective -- that the govt should not be regulating conduct or telling you what you should do.

You oppose abortion, which is fine. But you want to tell people what they should do -- just like some people want to dictate what you can do with your guns -- both are attempts to assert control. And you want to tell people who they can get married to -- which is about you wanting to control them because you don't like their choices.

But you're wrong about your examples of liberals. Liberals oppose socialism and socialized medicine. Because liberals oppose govt control.

It's odd that you favor govt control in areas of personal life, but oppose govt control in other areas -- seems inconsistent.

Well, that's a little harsh! One advantage of being a liber is we can sleep at night. We seem to be considerably more tolerant of others who are different in appearance, life style, opinions, well, tolerant of others, different or not. Having a live %26amp; let live attitude makes for a much happier life in general. It feels better as a liberal to help people in need, than to be a hard *** concerned only with the bottom line--and keeping people ';inline'; with the way THEY (the conservatives) think we should all live, believe, and any other thing the cons want to control--what's with the control issues conservative.

I used to get those emails from people who were trying to get a reaction out of me. I just ignore them and go about my business.
A lot of people are turned off by Conservative philosophy because of the messenger.

The media presents Liberal ideas as oh-so-progressive and enlightened. However, a truly savvy person will see through this charade and realize that Liberalism is a massively flawed point of view.

Here's a challenge: you post just three points where your grandfather says you are in error, or post three of your liberal ideas you think are irrefutable, and I will show you where you are wrong, if indeed your ideas are wrong.

By the way, have you ever had a real, in-depth conversation with your grandfather about politics? If you want the emails to stop voluntarily, you could try sitting down with him, and if you are so entrenched in your Liberal dogma that he sees there is no hope, he may give up, leaving you off the hook.
Since this is your grandpa, it's best to just delete the email, ignore it and forget about it. He loves you and he thinks he's doing the right thing. Many of us have conservatives in our families, and we just don't get into political discussions with them. You are very unlikely to change his mind no matter what proof you could give him... but you are quite likely to anger him if you try to discuss politics with him. So for everyone's sake, just delete it and don't give it a second thought. There are probably others in your life who would welcome your wisdom. Spend your time on them.

Here is something that Liberals aren't very familiar with. . . Allow him to have an opinion that is different from yours. Maybe he has more experience than you do and you should listen to him.
If he loves you he will respect your views. If not, he won't live forever.

If your opinions and ways are based only on what you feel or what you have heard, then they could very well *be* wrong. Do your own research and come to your own conclusions. Once you do that, you may freely defend your decisions.

Seattle. I was there for the first time in June and while it is a beautiful city and booming in on going building, I got the shock of my life. A group of us went walking to the Space needle from Bell St and a group of about 100 to 150 people approached on bicycles - naked. I mean completely naked. They had on body paint that it was evident they had applied themselves because several very conspicuous parts were missing paint. I was completely astonished that this must be legal because one guy was lagging about a block behind and a Seattle police officer told him he needed to hurry up before he lost his group completely. I am a conservative student pursuing a Political Science Degree at a liberal university. I find it certainly makes the classes more interesting. The vast majority of students are liberal minded as well so I get a lot of back lash when I voice my opinion in class, but it had led to some great debates. The teachers have never marked me down for going against their political beliefs in my essays or opinion pieces as long as I provide ample evidence to support my claims. Some argue with me in class and try to shut me down, but in an essay I can back myself up instead of getting caught off guard in class and I have yet to change my opinions just to avoid academic penalty nor will I because the joy of living in a free country is the privilege of choice. Some professors even enjoy a political challenge.

We are all products of our own individual environments. There are several factors in determining this. Among them are upbringing, life experience, social and economic positions. These days we tend to think in absolutes, but the reality is that few people are totally conservative, or totally liberal, no matter how we choose to describe ourselves. As for why I think the way I do, the answer is because it makes sense to me from my personal point of view.

Well, they got their Christmas wish, and for all of those who have been wishing for more government control over their lives, less freedoms, a lower standard of living in every aspect of their lives including the quality of health care, rising costs, which also include higher taxes than the cost of personal choice insurance, and dumbed down education--by Christmas your list is getting filled.

Government doesn't produce any money--just takes from those who succeed enough to pay into the government, which takes a big chunk in administering the money to pay others. And that pittance comes with government control and strings.

Without foreign force landing on our shores--without any dictator forcibly taking control of our government--without a whimper by the citizenry at large, the America as we knew it, is being changed to another socialistic country with limited personal freedom, limited opportunity, limited education and even limited life spans.

Sure we need a health insurance system, We can afford! I had health insurance and dropped it. I looked at the bill and after deductibles, co-pay and percentage of liability, the insurance company paid $4954.78. We paid $4236.83. We had paid the Insurance company $996.00 a month for the year. The hospital cost ended up on us, because the Doctor was in program not where he does his work. The anesthesiologist was also not in program. This just shows how screwed up things are. The Doctor chooses the Hospital and the anesthesiologist. What are you supposed to do tell him no, you want this one and this hospital.

I now put that money to the side I was paying to insurance every month. Nice nest egg after a year. Maybe a 6 month CD coming up.

Point is, Insurance is a nice way of saying I am giving you a job to manage my money in case I get sick. While your money is paying a CEO,s salary and all his underlings. When you finally need it what will they cover? what treatment will they let you receive and by whom?

When I get out of college (I'm currently under my parent's plan, since I'm a student), I'm already planning on buying into a public option, if one exists. Because of all the breaks corporations got the past 8-10 years, they've dropped insurance for many, many employees; including many of my close relatives as examples.
People keep saying on this thread that; healthy Americans 20-30 need healthcare too.. well in my opinion very few of them do unless they we're in some terrible accident or unfortunate event. What kind of person wants to lay down and take handouts when they are able to take care of themselves?

I avoid the doctors at all cost, hoping to avoid people calling me a doosh bag wimp who is always sniveling. Who wants to be known for their poor health anyway? I've stitched my own wound before and even pulled a tooth once. It was basically free; just some booze, needles, pliers, peroxide and bandages.

Can't we all just focus on being American? Shouldn't we all focus on being American? This whole ';liberals are trying to give our country to the enemy,'; rhetoric is just a waste of time. Same with the nuts on the left convinced EVERY conservative wants to turn the US into a dictatorship. All this separationism based on political beliefs is just helping to separate the country Why are we so hung up on political colors in this country? Those things aren't just labels. They are belief systems. Heart felt philosophies of right and wrong, moral and immoral, fair and unfair. What works and doesn't work.

Here is the thing I love about America.

Liberals HATE George Bush but they are patriotic enough to not try to overthrow the government.

Lesson 1. Information leads to knowledge. Knowledge leads to wisdom. Wisdom is what defines intelligence.

With that said, please understand that most liberals obtain their information from the drive-by, er I mean, main-stream media. That information along with the teachings of liberal professors these ';college educated'; libs view as the truth is why they will only be ';Reasonably Intelligent';. Conservative Americans know that the truth is in the actions and not the words of the individual. This is why most conservatives are ';Highly Intelligent'; and run most of the major corporations in this country, even without college diplomas.

If a liberal were to come up with a solution to an issue rather than an accusation or a protest, I might respect that person's position. But as we are very much aware of these days, Democrats are quick to put down and criticize our President for his decisions rather put their own careers on the line with a solution that might backfire and hurt their agenda.

Libs tell the American people what the people want to hear because the media tells them so. The media (TV, Newspapers, etc.) is slanted so far to the left that the viewer/reader has to fight through the garbage to get the facts. It's is a shame that not all Americans are strong enough to keep on fighting through the trash talking news and seek of the truth.

Don't hate someone for being a liberal; feel sorry for them. Tell them that they do not have to hate this country just because the Constitution says they have the right to. On the contrary...

What I have I experienced when I encounter a liberal is someone who usually has a liberal arts degree, either a BA, or higher (sometimes a BS, but I think many scientists do acknowledge their weaknesses as humans). The amount of education and information absorbed has surpassed their ability to think as a ';commoner';. A commoner being someone who works very, very hard physically as well as mentally. A commoner being someone who probably most likely seeks spiritual guidance from a Higher Power (God, for me) because said commoner acknowledges his/her weaknesses and seeks comfort from God.

Many of the liberals I have engaged in conversation do not usually believe in a Higher Power. Well, I take that back. I have relatives who believe in the same God as I do, but they don't believe in ';judging'; people. They believe in ';to each his/her own';, but I do not believe that the laws and rules that God has given us were meant to be pick and choose rules.

I do not by any means pretend to be a saint. I, in fact, am a sinner, but I acknowledge that I am nothing but a human being that requires Supreme guidance. My Supreme guidance has allowed me to distinguish right from wrong.

So, basically, the higher educated liberal usually believes their immense knowledge surpasses that of a Higher Power; thus, anything goes....as long as it's what THEY want...

This question can be asked both ways. Why do most conservatives believe in God. There's no actual proof of a god except for a book. The belief in a false deity would therefore make this person unintelligent and illogical.

It is like putting 18 scholars in a room to debate on a law of Torah, when the votes are counted you get 19. Same with Jews, they can't agree on who to agree with. But they all do agree on the same Hebrew Bible, whether an atheist or the Hispanic Rabbi of Mexico or the Rabbi head of England or Jerusalem . . . it is because the law must be applied to the very community it is addressing and not a world order or edict. It isn't easy to have a few groups going in 100s of directions at the same time, but that is they way life is for a Jew.

Imagine the weatherman on Israeli TV--you get Rabbis and the people each praying for rain in one location vs. another. The weather changes by the minute and hour. Can't keep up with the prayers and God's answers. How can you separate commitment to what is best for a democratic country where only non-Jews are playing King Solomon as if the land is a baby of two women? And the Jew? There is too many diverse voices from people in Washington, the least are the Jews whom concentrate on social issues like health care, pollution, world hunger, clean seas and oceans, etc. Why? People don't realize that there is no bodily reward for a heaven or a permanent hell in Judaism ever (check the Five Books of Moses). So, the Jews are worried about today, not a maybe, not 500 years from now, but what are we going to do to fix the horrible conditions of this world. Just this past week five dairies that supply milk for NYC will have to close because they can't charge what it costs them to keep a farm going!

While people are trying to throw out the baby with the bathwater, I don't think people are serious about God and the two Covenants that are in the Hebrew Bible (one for God-Fearers via the Jews that live by the Torah). As for those that think a woman only wears it because she is forced to, please come out of the trailer park and educate yourself. I am an American Muslim, I wear my scarf with pride. I had ancestors that fought for my right to practice the religion I choose.

I have had many negative incidents against me because of it, including being spit at, called names, and even a man tried to run me over. My husband has requested for me to stop wearing it because he worries for my safety and that of my daughter, but, I love my religion, and my scarf is part of not only my religion, but who I am. At my university we had two girls come from Iraq on a student exchange program. When they first came here the wore a veil and were covered from head to toe. 3 years later they are always wearing make up, high heels, and clothes just like their peers. They werent being forced to do anything and they choose for themselves what to wear. I dont even see men from muslim countries where clothes that cover everything but their hands or wear beards and a head robe. Funny what happens when your given some freedom. I have been in religion class i know it shows respect to God to be total covered, but Jesus said divorce is bad yet most americans suck at the marriage thing so i think a person would be better individualistic than conform

Ive read enough about Islam to know its worn by choice, the women arent forced into it, its to be respectful of their bodies or something so good for them. Now in muslim countries women still wear and is a sign of difference between men and women that have to hide their hair as if it were a sin. Look at the nomination/primary process. It is not aligned with the general election process. Prorated delegates, the more ';democratic process';, creates a longer, more expensive nomination process and delivers candidates that cannot win in the winner take all general election.

The party tends to nominate candidates that are too liberal to win in the GE. McGovern, Dukakas, Mondale, Kerry. The only elections won over the last 40 years have been gifts - Nixon gave us a Carter White House, and Ross Perot the first Clinton win. Since the 70's the only real win the Dems have had is Clinton's reelection.

So why is Clinton denounced? My theory is the Democrats are principle oriented and love idealistic thinkers who are not willing to compromise. It is the Republicans who are more pragmatic and goal oriented. Clinton is a Democrat in policy, but Republican like in his objectives. He worked for progress and results, and did not stubbornly hold out for the ';perfect ideal'; solution - a position that tends to result in zero progress. An example of this was his implementation of ';Don't ask. Don't tell.'; This was a comprise solution, and represented a progressive step to an open military. Being gay would still be considered a discharge-violation of the COC if not for Clinton, but the Dems felt that he sold out.

And, in general, Democrats lean to the left (these days some to the left of Stalin) It is to general to label ';Churchgoers'; as Conservative, as there are those that attend church that are *very* liberal... however those that are ';fundamentalist'; are usually Conservative in other ways also. As to Labeling oneself, what is wrong with that? One must stand for something or be labeled wishy washy...
Liberal and conservative are philosophies -- and fairly broad ones at that. Most who call themselves that happen to believe in at least the core of the philosophy, actively enough to want to defend those beliefs.

Church is a matter of religious belief -- and independent of politics. Someone can be very faithful without needing to impose that faith on others.

As for the Democratic party -- they stopped supporting the liberal agenda many years ago -- but unlike the Republicans, at least they are not directly opposed to the liberal agenda -- thus as a ';lesser of two evils';, many liberals would rather have a Democrat who at least won't get in their way, as opposed to a Republican who directly opposes them.

The idea of liberalism and conservatism being opposed is ridiculous! It's perfectly possible to be a liberal conservative or a conservative liberal. You can't, however, be a socialist capitalist.
I have heard two explanations which makes sense to me, but neither seems to answer it fully:

[1] Liberals focus on what's wrong with the world and worry about how to fix it. Conservatives focus on what's right with the world and worry about how to preserve it.

[2] Liberals believe in cooperation. Conservatives believe in competition. Liberals believe in helping people who are down. Conservatives believe that helping people just encourages them to stay down.

If anyone tries to tell you that the difference is Liberals want the government to spend lots of money and conservatives want the government to spend smaller amounts of money, don't believe them. History has shown that the government spends more money when conservatives are in control.

I will illustrate with a example 50 years ago SS seems like a great idea at the beginning 50 people paid in for every 1 receiving benefits now we are close to 3 to 1 when it gets to 2 to 1 it will collapse we have trillions of dollars in benefits that has to be paid out to retirees that will have to be borne by younger workers and there is no realistic way to reverse this program.

Liberal and corrupt. I was terribly disappointed to see the quality of men he nominated. Two, if I recall correctly, dropped out of running because of issues of corruption. The Treasury is being run by a man who failed to pay his income taxes. In my opinion, this is not what Obama promised the nation.

Also his bailout program is pure socialism. There is very little there to stimulate the economy. It appears to me that he is using the fear of the recession to pass socialist programs without their receiving any serious consideration by the people or congress.

He has already changed his mind. During the elections, he was ready to bring change. Now that he is elected ';It's only going to get worse before it gets better';.

Personally, I think he will blame this on Bush for the next four years. As much Bush Bashing as there is, it might work.

My hope is that the Americans will wise up and elect a Republican Congress in two years. That would be the only thing that will balance his social liberalism.

I have been very impressed with Nick Clegg and his party. They have been upfront and direct about all this fiddling business. Lets face it the current two main parties have not exactly done a good job over the last 50 years have they ?? Why do you think we are in such a mess.

There is a need for total reform starting with fixed term parliaments. Get rid of the controlling Whips procedure which stops MPs speaking their mind and voting with their conscience or in line with what their voters want.

I have always been Old Labour and have never voted since John Smith died because i knew what a control freak, liar Tony Blair was. I will vote Lib Dem when the time comes. Even now Cameron speaks mealy mouthed in a language he can adapt to say later that he did not say this or that. Nick Clegg is saying exactly what he intends to do, no mixed words. The Liberals used to be in power in the UK, but that was a long time ago. I nwould love to see a resurgence in the Liberal party. Britain needs more than just the Tories or the Labour -party as main contenders.
No, I think that it is very unlikely that Lib Dem will be the majority party in Parliament. With the MPs scandal, the Lib Dems may pick up more votes, but it depends on how forgiving the Tory voters are about their own MPs!

One that comes to mind is repatriation of slaves. The liberal response to slavery for years was to free the slaves and then ship them back to Africa, since even liberals at that time took for granted that blacks could never live in the US as citizens. The widespread and naive belief of liberals through much of the mid 20th century that Stalin was a humane leader and the Soviet Union was the way of the future also comes to mind.

I'd also say that at least one current popular liberal position, supporting the abolition of nuclear weapons, is foolish. I think this for two reasons: first, if the traditional powers had no nuclear deterrent at all, the potential reward for illegally building nukes by rogue states would be far too high, and the risks far too low. Second, the real danger isn't in the physical weapons, but in the technical knowledge of how to build them. Many, the original Liberal party in England put 'progress' first and foremost of their creeds, that included at the time children working down mines, industrialisation of the entire country, bowing to your 'elders and your betters and (unbelievable and uncontrolled pollution right up until 1958!) Ah that was the future, an empire where a young white Liberal man of proper birth could exploit 95% of the population and live literally like Kings did previously.

Pretty much all of the original 'liberal' ideals are pretty much the opposite now. In the US Liberal came to mean left wing when the real left wing (Socialists through to Communists) were either criminalised or marginalised severely. Middle of the road is popular there at the moment but ideology and politics are driven by events not 'popularity' in the long term!
Boycotting the 1980 Moscow Olympics over Russia's invasion of Afghanistan comes to mind. Not only did Carter do nothing but take the Olympic chances away from athletes who had trained all their lives, but he absolutely ruined the supposedly non-politial Olympics with politics. Today, WE are the ones invading Afghanistan.

Whining about media bias is silly. There's enough proof out there which way things really go. The media is biased towards its own interests, so it isn't a democrat or a republican bias we should be talking about but rather a consumption-driven, pro-capitalism, pro-fear bias. They show the things that sell stuff. Right now the economy is bad, so they'll be showing things to make people feel safer. When the econ picks up again, they'll try to scare them.

In the UK the media is more impartial. The US media is largely controlled by right wing conservatives and they, understandably, make every effort to paint liberalism in a bad light. In the UK we don't have the media telling us that liberalism is bad all the time, and we're intelligent enough to realise that liberalism is generally a good thing. Conservatives in the UK are generally liberal at heart, if more Americans stopped to think about what they really believed, they would realise that they're also more liberal than they think - a good education system, good affordable (or free) healthcare, a healthy environment. I've asked similar type questions in the past myself. Being British, liberal means open minded to me. It is also the name of a centre ground political party (I believe there is still a Liberal party out there made up of members that did not move to the LibDems when they formed.) The word would never be used as an insult in this country.

It would seem that in the US it is an insult bandied around to people who do not have right wing ideals or beliefs. As you can see from some of the postings above it gets some pretty strong reaction from conservatives (or neocons, another insult in the opposite direction) It seems that a word as innocent as liberal has such a bad meaning in the States.

American liberals have an agenda that although well-meant, has had adverse effects on our society. My biggest concern is the length of time convicted killers are allowed to appeal their sentences, as well as most things that pertain to our justice system. I laud their progressive thinking, but their ideals are for a society that is ready for them. I too realize that change is always difficult and-like revolution-it can be a good thing, but our society has really gone to the dogs in a lot of ways because of their lobbying for changes in law and justice. Perpetrators of crimes have no rights at all in my mind. And if you are innocent, there has to be some reason you were charged that suggests to me that you are guilty of something for someone to charge you.

Thomas Aquinas, the ';father'; of Natural Law methodology in 5 volumes commenting on a ';list of sins'; never once mentioned slavery or owning slaves. He also determined that rape was LESS a sin than masturbation.

Lawrence isn't really all that liberal of a city... it's just liberal for the state of Kansas. In the mean time, enjoy the fact that your town attracts a lot more musical acts on tour than a city that size normally would. Find whatever groups cater to your interests and hobbies, and join them.

If that's not enough, there are plenty of smaller, more conservative towns around. Nearby, even. Well within commuting distance.
yeah there are good points... like culture. you know, national turing bands, local bands that dont suck, restaurants, good pot, art, theatre, lectures ect. but if your not into that, say your only into smoking and liberal bashing, you might want to go live in the rural south or something.

In this day and age we have the ability to get news tailored to any particular slant we hold. In the original days of the Fairness Doctrine choice was very limited and therefore protection of what airways did exist was extremely important. This same scenario does not exist anymore and no one entity could hope to control all media. However, if any one group was able to accomplish this I would expect another statute to protect the people. That would be antitrust laws. You can spin this however you like, but those desiring new application of the Fairness Doctrine have one goal in mind. This is to attempt to silence voices they do not agree with, not to balance content. I will never support this idea regardless of how it is presented. Some might, but I don't think most actual conservatives would.

The best thing would be for government to stop forcing ';fairness'; (not to be confused with equality). There is a lot of hypocrisy from both sides on this issue. Liberals cry for fairness, but that should not be applied to private entertainment. Even if it is calling itself ';news';, it is there to sell commercial time and that should be taken into account when listening. Same with TV news.

Conservatives bemoan the doctrine as suppression and unnecessary (perhaps rightfully so), but the same standard is not applied across the board. Publicly they are saying ';let things be';, but at the same time Republicans have been dismantling science, altering standards, changing ';peer-review';, etc. in attempt to bring fairness to the scientific arena. This is demonstrated with the hearings on AGW and the push to have ';teach the controversy'; taught in public schools in regards to evolution.

In the 20 years since the fairness doctrine was scrapped we've seen AM radio go from the land of the Carpenters (let's accept Mack's argument for now) to a 24-7 channel for the Republican party, a channel that broadcasts the worst sort of slurs against Democrats with impunity. It provides what must be billions in free advertising for Republicans (has anyone quantified this?) Given that most of the public is not Republican, this state of affairs clearly goes against the idea of broadcast stations being public concerns impressed with the public trust.

And no, ';public trust'; does not equal ';sandbox for demagogic right wing talkers.'; So frankly the I am unimpressed with the cries from conservatives that they would lose half their time on the radio. Why should they have that much time? They certainly don't represent half the people in the country.

Journal Communications, Clear Channel and the rest clearly have demonstrated they're incapable of upholding the public trust through self-regulation. And so we need some sort of fairness doctrine to help ensure this trust is upheld. The restoration of such a regulatory regime may create business challenges for these conglomerates but I don't really care. They had their chance and they blew it.

I see that Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart are upset about McCain %26amp; Palin using ';Barracuda'; during the GOP convention and asked them to stop using it immediately. Aside from some country western stars, it seems as if most popular music artists are vocally left-wing, similar to actors I guess. I wonder why that is the case? Why are so many recording artists liberal democrats?
I have a few opinions in this matter. Musicians tend to try to appeal to the masses in order to promote their art... if their ';message'; was that of being from a higher tax bracket (of which they become once their music sells) who would buy their CDs?

Also, artsy folks are thought of the type that give more back to those in need, which the Democrats taut as their message.

Realistically, Republicans do give more back but not generally as a physical act but as a monetary act. And when they do donate money it's a substantial difference compared to their cheaper Democratic counterpart.

Bottom line... most music has been about pain and suffering which seems to be the way Democrats want the world to view itself as. When McCain and Palin have a message of hope, which artist wants to be associated with that if it doesn't sell records???!!!Why are so many recording artists liberal democrats?

Which towns in California are most liberal?

I am going off to college soon. I have been having some trouble finding out which places in California are most liberal. It's very important to me that it is liberal. I would like it if it was near the beach and somewhere between San Fransisco and San Diego. Sorry to get so specific!Which towns in California are most liberal?
The Bay Area is the most liberal region in the country, so pretty much anything in or near there will be liberal except for the Central Valley.

Your best bet for a liberal college town near the beach is Santa Cruz and the main university there is UC Santa Cruz. There is also Cabrillo Community College. The city is VERY VERY liberal and was one of the first cities to allow medical marijuana. It's also on the beach and since it faces south it's much warmer than most coastal cities in Northern CA.

Davis is also a VERY liberal college town halfway between SF and Sacramento and the school there is UC Davis. But it's not near any beaches.

Santa Barbara is pretty liberal but there are a lot of rich people there so it's that limousine liberalism and there are conservatives as well b/c of all the wealth. UC Santa Barbara is a good school but a huge party school.

San Luis Obispo is fairly liberal and a college town that is only about 15 mintues to the ocean. Cal Poly SLO is the school there.

Santa Monica is also very liberal but not a college town, but there are several colleges and universities nearby like UCLA, Loyola Marymount, Santa Monica Community College, Pepperdine (which is a conservative school), a couple of Cal State Universities like Dominguez Hills and Long Beach.

SF of course is very liberal but the beaches are pretty cold there. SF State is right near the ocean and there are a couple of other schools like USF and Cal Berkeley across the bay, and Berkely is probably the most liberal of all cities in america.

But just be aware that once you go north of Santa Barbara the ocean water is always too cold to swim in anytime of year and the weather is cooler and foggier than the Southern Ca coast.Which towns in California are most liberal?
Santa Monica. I've heard people jokingly call it ';The People's Republic of Santa Monica'; meaning that the politics there is somewhat left wing.

The perfect place for you is Berkely! The location is very convenient to SF, just 20 minutes (13 miles) across the bay. UC Berkeley is a great school and it's just a short drive from many, many beaches.
Santa Barbara is fairly liberal and has a state and UC school. Chico is liberal, but farther north than SF. San Franscisco is very liberal and has a state and UC school. San Diego is not liberal and you should plan on staying clear of there. Los Angeles is thought to be liberal but areas around UCLA and such can be a little conservative. It is all a matter of degrees. Irvine is very conservative.

I'm a proud member of the republican party. I own several guns, have extensive holdings in the stock market, drive American cars and have 2 pit bulls. However, because I'm in favor of things like universal health care and civil liberties, I find myself constantly being called a 'liberal' by my fellow republicans. Is this fair? Two posts here jump out at me as significant reasons the modern Republican Party has little to no appeal to Black and other Americans of color. Although I realize that the official stance of the party DOES NOT IN ANY SENSE support such statements, a problem is that neither will they come out and distance themselves from such statements. It seems that they are more interested in keeping a vote in their column than in destroying a belief attached to that vote.

The first post DEFINES civil liberties as ';special rights based on color and ethnicity';. All of us have Constitutionally protected civil rights and liberties. Civil Liberties are an AMERICAN right. NONE of us are supposed to have LESS of these rights and liberties. NONE of us are supposed to have MORE. And NONE of us are given SPECIAL rights and liberties. If the poster or anyone who supports such a contention can find provable instances of such Constitutional abuses, I will graciously admit my error and I'll work tirelessly to REMOVE these unfair roadblocks to our promise of equality and justice for all.

The second poster states that ';.......favoring race over merit go against everything for which the Republican party stands.'; Implied in that statement is a belief that ANOTHER ENTITY DOES forward the idea of ';race over merit.'; Again, given proof, I'll consider the merits of such a statement. Otherwise it is symbolic of a mal-formed conclusion drawn from paranoia and out-and-out lies. The fact is EVERYONE wants the BEST team working for them that they can assemble. MERIT is a BROAD term used to describe an ASSORTMENT of talents and skills, NOT a term to just describe ';good grades'; or longevity. In MANY instances that even the poster can cite, a need for specific skills and know-how WILL BE DESIRABLE over simply the highest SAT score. It is idiotic to think that PUTTING SOMEONE IN A JOB THAT THEY CAN'T DO ....is endemic of a ';particular'; political party or people.

It depends on the number of credits and requirements for the music major program, which varies between schools. At some schools, it is completely feasible to complete a music degree in two years. At others, it would be impossible because of the high number of credits and classes with pre-requisites. You should look at the major program and see whether you can compress the four years into two or not.

Well, check to make sure your college has a campus LGBT group. No group is a sign of a repressive and conservative administration.

Check the college's anti-discrimination policy. It should include gender and sexual orientation, and if it actually includes gender identity, you've found yourself a particularly accepting college.

If the college does have an LGBT group, be sure to ask them whether the college is generally good with LGBT people, and handles their concerns in a timely and respectful manner. Ask how previous problems have been dealt with.

Also, look around on bulletin boards. Are there posters for the LGBT group, or for other LGBT-related things? Are they vandalized? One or two vandalized poster is to be expected, but if every single one has ';Die f**s'; etc. written on it, this is a bad sign.

Check to see if the housing department goes out of its way to accommodate trans students. Gender-neutral housing is a good sign. Placing trans people in their desired dorms is a good sign. Even though it doesn't necessarily apply to you, how a university treats its trans students can be a good indicator of how accepting it is. It's become semi-socially unacceptable to discriminate against gays, but only the truly progressive colleges protect transpeople.I am looking at colleges and how can I find out how liberal or diverse the town is?

I would love to major in Philosophy because thats who I am in every day life-a philosopher. Biology is also useful and interesting. However, Philosophy is a liberal art. Does UF have a descent Philosophy program? What about Biology? UF is definitely not a Liberal Arts university. If you look at the cutbacks UF have been doing over the past 2 years, most of it have been in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. UF has cut several Liberal Arts programs even before it considered cutting their recreational scuba classes and other non academic courses.

If you want to major in Liberal Arts, go to one of the smaller private universities in Florida or go to FSU.

If you go for Liberal Arts, keep this in mind as you pursue your degree: think about how you will sell a potential employer someday on your knowledge acquired: your understanding of human nature, your awareness of history, sociology and economics as they relate to the global economy, your facility in languages (be sure to specialize in a second one if you don't already have that knowledge in your skills set)....

In other words, think of ';hard'; skills that can be demonstrated with a ';soft'; (in the eyes of some employers) major.

And get a few business classes under your belt too when feasible. With this combination of broad knowledge and demonstrable skills, you'll be unstoppable.

(If your back's really to the wall down the road, tell the interviewer you chose liberal arts because at that time you were thinking pre-law, usually a perfectly acceptable strategy when pursuing a B.A.)

I am a creative-type who is currently in an English degree program. I was thinking about going to a degree plan that would be more marketable, and maybe just getting an English minor. I'm not interested in a straight business admin degree, so can you suggest any degree plans (ex, marketing or communications)? Or do you think I should just stick with the Liberal Arts degree?

Just need some various opinions from various people; a lot of individuals these days have a negative view on going to liberal arts colleges. They keep on muttering that you usually wind up as a teacher. Now I don't find anything wrong with being an educator, I just want to know all the opportunities. If you go to a good liberal arts college with a good economics department and get good grades, then as a candidate for grad schools you'll be even more impressive since you'll be a more well rounded student in the process. (Assuming you do go to grad school.)

I've never heard the argument that liberal arts students tend to produce teachers. But I can understand the gripe with liberal arts schools that many may have since they force students to study other subjects along with their preferred major. This can be frustrating, but there's a bit of a movement to minimize the effects non-major classes have on students' GPAs. This frustration may lead some to make the comment that liberal arts colleges are for ';teachers'; because it doesn't strictly adhere to one's major but it shouldn't be taken seriously.

Sounds a bit like me. He would appear liberal when looked at from certain angles (for example, I am pro-choice and pro-gay) but conservative from other angles (hated the bailouts, hates welfare, etc.)

There are three substantive lessons to be drawn from this incident:

They will promote a society in which its ok to kiss your gay lover in school but not be allowed to publicly carry your Bible or say a prayer.

They promote the so called ';Fairness'; Doctrine to restrict speech unless it conforms to their views.

Institutions like the ACLU use Liberal judges, appointed by Liberals for life, to get rulings that go against Christian beliefs. You'll have to provide some documentation or links to sources that support the ';rid the world'; idea and the Obama reference. I've seen nothing in literature on Dawkins to support your claims. He supports Obama's belief in separating church and state. Obama put to rest the idea that in modern America we are a ';Christian nation';, and speaks about inclusiveness, while acknowledging our diversity.
I don't think Dawkins believes Obama will get rid of religion, he just thinks that Obama will reinforce the secular traditions America was founded on.

Wow, a really good question. A conservative is generally someone that wants less government in most aspects in our lives. In most cases, they want to protect the status quo, typically because it's in their favor. They tend to promote Christianity and denounce taxes of the most part. A liberal is generally someone that wants to make changes (progress) where there are issues (i.e. Civil Rights). Liberals tend to want to ultilize taxes for the benefit of the entire country and although they don't actively promote religion, they are in fact Christians. The latter is the part that Conservatives tend to ignore, in an effort to convince the public that liberal=evil. It really all comes down to God, guns and taxes.

They dislike each other so because they feel that the other is going to be the downfall of the country. Each feels that the radicals on each wing are highjacking the respective parties. It's crazy.

They don't seemed interested in really addressing the problems of the people. An example is Terri Schaivo. How absurd is it to convene for one person when there are millions homeless, hungry and uninsured (in the US no less)? Liberal and conservatives alike dropped the ball on this.

I frequently want to understand how in this day of political correctness, that each party can be so uncivilized to each other. A conservative is a person who conserves money but spends it stupidly. A liberal is someone who gets as much money as possible but lacks the brains to spend it wisely.

I think the main difference between the two is that cons wear religion on their sleeve and liberals do not. Cons are dogmatic thinkers, liberals are free thinkers. Cons believe that their way of life is the only life to live so we should preach (or force) it into other countries, liberals believe that everyone should live their own life as they see fit and tolerate cultural differences more effectively.

The problem is that 'conservative' and 'republican' in the same sentence these days is an oxymoron. They are supposed to be conservative in fiscal spending, foreign affairs, and expanding government. But they have done nothing but the opposite in the last 8 years.

I see the US political system has become more liberal, not the voters. Look at the last election as an example. We had to choose between a Socialist and a center-of-the aisle RINO. Conservatives had to hold their nose and vote for McCain to avoid having a radical totalitarian in the White House.

Unlike many of the usual suspects here, I actually read your question. I understand your meaning regarding youth, but I assure you that there's an increasing number of adults that exhibit the same shockingly low level of economic, political, historical, and basic literacy.

Most of the people who ';answered'; your question couldn't adequately define or show a working knowledge of libertarianism, conservatism, liberalism, fascism, socialism, etc. if their life depended on it. They have virtually no understanding of the differences between -current- Democrats and Republicans... both parties have completely redefined themselves.

To answer your question: Evidence shows that your premise is incorrect. While the government is certainly going deeper and deeper into socialism, the population itself is going the opposite direction.

Countries that begin with a great deal of personal freedoms and economic liberty (very close cousins) eventually reach a level of prosperity so great that they begin to include entitlement programs, and socialism-lite which results in three possible outcomes:

1.) The country flips back and forth, though never fully recovering from the liberal turns (such is the case of the United States) - think three steps back; two steps forward.

2.) The country goes past a point of no return with liberalism which results in a fascistic government.

3.) A --benevolent-- dictator assumes control and enforces freedom on all fronts. When he/she dies, option 2 eventually results.
Maybe. I've noticed that many conservatives are starting to dis-associate with the Republican party, as they have proven themselves in the last 8 years to NOT be for limited federal government as they would have had us believe and start associating with outside the box groups like the Libertarian and Constitutional Parties as well as trying to work within the system with the Republican Liberty caucus.

I personally would have voted for a Republican if it was Ron Paul, but I just couldn't get that excited about John McCain... It just seemed like a third term of Bush. The military ballot process wasn't really worth my time since third party votes would not have been counted and I really didn't like either candidate.

Sometimes I wonder if I should have voted McCain just to keep Obama out... He would have grown the deficit for programs that I find unethical Im sure... But he likely would have done it at a much slower, less destructive rate than our current president.

Not really. I have seen no change. But what I am surprised about is that while now over 90% of the country thinks Obama is spending too much, that pattern is not the same on Y! Answers. You would think that the percentages would be the same on Answers as the rest of the country.
