Is it possible to be a Christian and a democrat or liberal at the same time?

I had a teacher in the 8th grade tell me the number one defining difference between democrats and republicans was democrats believe government gives you all your rights and republicans believe your rights are given to you by God. This bit of wisdom was given to me back in 1968. Tells my age but it is relevant to how the parties operate and believe. Totally shows what motivates them. Is it possible to be a Christian and a democrat or liberal at the same time?
Certainly, but I think you'll have trouble reconciling certain aspects of both the Democratic and Republican party with Christian theology. Both parties are imperfect.





The issues that most offend most Christians aren't going to be resolved by government (i.e. abortion, divorce, premarital sex, etc) - they are going to be resolved by the Holy Spirit working through believers. I find that many Christians use government as a scapegoat for not doing their job as believers - simply voting for a prolife candidate isn't good enough - you need to win the hearts and minds of those around you in a loving and thoughtful way.Is it possible to be a Christian and a democrat or liberal at the same time?
modern liberals tend to think that you (as in the people at large) give you your rights, not the government. That statement comes from a time when people generally trusted the government. Further, if god was ultimately the source of our rights, how can our government take them away? More specifically, how can a republican president like GW take away rights like habeas corpus (where is the body)?





such as statement is a generalization. people decide for themselves what to believe, even if it incites a bit of cognitive dissonance.
Of course it is. Just as it is possible to be a republican and an atheist...as many are.

Second of all there is a great history of Liberal Republican Christian social activism in this country that the Christian Right seems to deny the existence of.


While certain segments of American Christianity are Conservative ,Christ himself was very much a liberal if not a socialist






If reps believe rights are given by God, then why is bush always trying to take our rights from us (just recently it was correctly revealed that his illegal phone tapping was used to listen in on ordinary citizens to see who's against him.





';Whatever you do unto the least among you, you do unto me'; -- Jesus Christ. Apparently that passage does not appear in bibles owned by republicans. The bible in various places, tells us that taking advantage of the poor is a one-way ticket to hell. The republicans cannot understand that, violate it as often as they can, and believe in ';survival of the fittest'; which is a truly Darwinian component of evolution which they (republicans) say ';is the work of the devil.';





No, absolutely not. The republican Party is the Party of evil. Look at all of the lies and corruption that this administration has dumped on us. They even support ballot tampering as bush's retarded brother Jeb did in the Florida elections of 2000. Those clowns only use righteousness as a guise to cover their rottenness. Republicans love money as if it was spiritual salvation, while the bible warns, ';Those who love money hate God.'; That indefatigible phrase cannot be argued away





No, the dems aren't holy, but they don't claim to be anyway as the repugnant reptilian republicans claim to be. In this God and devil scenario, words (especially good ones about oneself) do not matter. It's actions that counts, and ';by their works ye shall know them'; is what the republicans hide from in the shadows.
