conservative - people who generally like to uphold current conditions and oppose change, generally speaking more traditionalists. Conservatives are often referred to as the right wing.





liberal - people who generally like to reform current conditions, more ';modern'; thinking. Liberals are often referred to as the left wing.





Normally, conservatives for example are opposed to same-sex marriage stating that it should be traditional - only a man and a woman, while liberals are more ';why is it our business who someone would want to marry?';

It isn't a difference in philosophy. It's instinct.





Back when people came out of the trees and hunted and gathered for their food, there were those people in each tribe, the conservatives, who believed that competing tribes would kill them, taking everything they had, if they didn't kill the other tribes first. Some people in each tribe, the liberals, believed that other tribes were the same, that if they lived in cooperation they could thrive and live without being governed by fear. This liberal thinking didn't take hold until people figured out ranching, farming and irrigation. These technologies allowed tribes to grow larger, to stay put rather than following the food around, and to stop fighting with other tribes for resources, since they could grow their own. When liberals of these tribes successfully shared this technology with other tribes so all tribes could stop fighting, it was the dawning of a new era of humanity.


However, no matter the fact that fighting for resources is no longer necessary, some people are still conservative, fearful of people who are different. Kill or be killed is their paranoid mantra. You can see it in Sarah Palin who calls Eskimos the Alaskan Arabs, and many conservative people who fear Barack Obama for having his father's skin color. ';They're different, so they must be after our resources';.


Most of the free world is far more liberal than the USA. And healthier, too.
Liberal - a person who favors a political philosophy of progress and reform and the protection of civil liberties





Conservative - disposed to preserve existing conditions, institutions, etc., or to restore traditional ones, and to limit change.

Oooh, Katie has a fair answer. BUT, I want to add that normally liberals are also more like ';save the country as a whole'; and conservatives are more ';too bad for the country, this is about me and mine'; ;)
Conservatives - support old ways, low tax and fewer handouts


Liberals - support new solutions, higher tax and more support





And both will accuse the other of hating freedom, being crazy and wanting their country's downfall.
