Liberals: Some churches are socially liberal. Why is that acceptable in the eyes of God?

I always thought that God was socially conservative. He was against abortion, same sex-marriage, and stem cell research.

Now it would make sense to be socially liberal if you didn't believe in God because there would be no restriction. You would have complete freedom to do whatever you want, but a socially liberal church? How does that fit?Liberals: Some churches are socially liberal. Why is that acceptable in the eyes of God?
God is against abortion, same sex marriage, and stem cell research? You are assuming a lot since during the time the bible was written none of those issues were even mentioned or part of society. If you'd ever read the bible then the actions and words associated to Jesus were clearly very liberal for the time.Liberals: Some churches are socially liberal. Why is that acceptable in the eyes of God?
There is not one single verse in the entire Bible which opposes abortion. Stem cell research is not necessarily connected to abortion in any case. I'm opposed to same sex marriage because i don't think homosexuals have anything to gain from it, but believing that homosexuality is always wrong is severely counter-intuitive and it would be necessary to stop listening to the God-given gift of conscience to believe that. Also, being made in the image of God, rationality means i cannot believe homosexuality to be wrong. However, the main issue is celibacy versus sexual activity, not homosexuality versus heterosexuality, concerning Scripture. Celibacy is clearly depicted as morally superior to either.

Conservatism has coopted Christ, and He is neither yours nor ours. I can come on fundamentalist with certain things in the gospels and elsewhere if i so choose, and question why Christians of any complexion have cars, own their own homes and have deposit accounts. However, that would be self-righteous of me and we both know Christ told us not to judge.
How is condemning people for every small infraction acceptable in the eyes of God? Many ultra-conservative Christians have some pretty scary notions of God. The God they talk about isn't the one I know or worship.

Just because people have been doing things a certain way for awhile doesn't make it right. We advance and learn new things as time goes on. It would be ignorant to not be open to new knowledge. Truth may never change, but who's to say that we ever had the complete knowledge of truth before? God helps to open our eyes and we have to be willing to see things differently. Ultra-conservatives are closing themselves off to the Holy Spirit.
How do you know what God wants, or what God decided? You don't. No one does. It's incredibly ridiculous for anyone to claim that they know what God has decided. Don't you think it sounds more Christian-like to be socially accepting of the choices other people make in their lives rather than condemn them based upon a judgmental lie?
You've been listening to too many conservative Christians. There are many Liberal Christians around, with different understandings of the Bible, God's love, and Jesus. For us, the conservative understanding of Christianity as upholding the status quo and intensely hierarchically driven has a name, and it's phariseeism. Jesus was about radical love and resisting domination.
God is against abortion??? Really???? God who sends his own son to endure the tortous death on the cross is against abortion????? God who orders all first borns to be killed as a plague is against abortion????? God who condoned the stoning of women without hymens is against abortion???? God, who is credited for 'knowing better' when a miscarriage happens is against abortion?????? God who knowingly allows murderers to kill and abuse children is against abortion???????

I wont argue too much on same sex marriage, I know what the Bible says. But you should take a second look. Lev is talking about men frequenting male prostitutes instead of their wives and concubines, Paul was talking about temple prostitution, and Jesus never mentioned it.

There isnt even anything comparable to stem cell research in the Bible. By the way, its ONLY embryonic stem cell research that Christains are against, and interesting you forget to mention IVF.

Socially liberal chruches are people who understand that the Bible was written thousands of years ago, in a culture that we couldnt be any further removed from.
You've never actually read the gospels, have you?

Jesus was an unabashed liberal. Conservative Christians have to confine themselves to the Old Testament and some of Paul's letters to bolster their ideas. You rarely see conservative churches focusing on the gospels.
Jesus was one of the biggest social liberals of all time.

That's why they killed him, in fact. Ironic, huh?

';I always thought that God was socially conservative. He was against abortion, same sex-marriage, and stem cell research.';

Nooo, not God. It's only his *followers* who are against those things.
I think a lot of people are liberal BECAUSE of the Bible. They see that the scriptures are very concerned about things like taking care of the poor, the minorities, and the outcasts. They also see that the Bible is not nearly as decisive about sexuality and abortion as many conservatives say it is.

There's also an argument to be made that the Bible argues that Christians cannot impose their values on society as a whole (see 1 Cor. 5.9-13). So even if they don't believe in homosexuality or abortion for Christians, they argue that they cannot force those beliefs on non-Christians. And they certainly can't make laws based on those beliefs.

I don't think most liberal Christians believe we can simply do whatever we want. Instead, I think liberal Christians recognize 1) they cannot enforce their morality on non-Christians, 2) the scriptures are not as clear on many of the hot-button issues as conservatives claim, and 3) there are many clear commands in the Bible regarding standing up for the poor, the weak, the oppressed, the alien, etc. that the church has failed to follow.

In short, I think a lot of people see that Jesus was a liberal in the context of his day, and they argue that the church should be a force for change and hope in society.
God is against stem cell research? REALLY? Did you talk to him in the last decade or so? If not, then you don't know if he's against it or not.

I don't believe in God. But the God in the Bible doesn't sound like a TOTAL douche-bag. I mean, really? You think that all liberals going to hell is what will happen?

My god. (Not that I believe in the same one as you), but give your God a little credit! And since when is giving the poor welfare and letting others do what they f u c k i n g want wrong in the eyes of God?

How does being a conservative christian work? That is wrong in my mind.

I am sorry I am being so rude, but intolerance makes me very angry.

I still wish you PEACE!
God is way, WAY above such worldly classifications as conservative and liberal. He wants us to be righteous, loving and merciful.
Please find me a few references where God said he was against stem-cell research. I'd love to hear that.

Also, have you ever read the gospels? There is very little in what Jesus actually said to support any of your three points.
God is God, and he never changes

To be socially liberal as you stated, is a veering away from God. God is no longer first in their lives...Humans are.

For they have chosen Human wants and desires over God's tenants.

The heart of the Christian delights in the will of God.

The person below me has obviously not read the gospels....for if she had, she would know her folly.
