I am looking at colleges and how can I find out how liberal or diverse the town is?

I am going to graduate from high school next spring and I want to go to a liberal open minded college with some diversity. I am gay so I want to make sure I am going to a college that is more open minded and that has a open minded community.I am looking at colleges and how can I find out how liberal or diverse the town is?
Well, check to make sure your college has a campus LGBT group. No group is a sign of a repressive and conservative administration.

Check the college's anti-discrimination policy. It should include gender and sexual orientation, and if it actually includes gender identity, you've found yourself a particularly accepting college.

If the college does have an LGBT group, be sure to ask them whether the college is generally good with LGBT people, and handles their concerns in a timely and respectful manner. Ask how previous problems have been dealt with.

Also, look around on bulletin boards. Are there posters for the LGBT group, or for other LGBT-related things? Are they vandalized? One or two vandalized poster is to be expected, but if every single one has ';Die f**s'; etc. written on it, this is a bad sign.

Check to see if the housing department goes out of its way to accommodate trans students. Gender-neutral housing is a good sign. Placing trans people in their desired dorms is a good sign. Even though it doesn't necessarily apply to you, how a university treats its trans students can be a good indicator of how accepting it is. It's become semi-socially unacceptable to discriminate against gays, but only the truly progressive colleges protect transpeople.I am looking at colleges and how can I find out how liberal or diverse the town is?
Typically, the liberal arts schools with majors in writing, history, and some sciences tend to be more liberal, and the science and math schools are a little less.

Colleges are much bigger than high schools. There will be a mix of people no matter where you go. However, there are probably better answers on Google.
Well, normally city schools are VERY open minded, much more than a school that is located in the middle of nowhere. But we're talking about colleges, so it really just depends on the school

great site for all college information, including how liberal the school is...

Well usually a college has tours for incoming students and orientations and stuff. But you could also just ask people who have or are going there. Also maybe look at the clubs? Like if they have some more open-minded things like a GSA maybe the school is more open-minded.

Your best bet would be to look at the Universities LGBT society. If they have one you can assume they are a little open minded but you can contact the society and ask them about what they think about the University in those terms.
Go to the U OF M in ANN ARBOR, MI! very diverse!
